Review: Fangtooth - Fangtooth (Solitude Productions)

The debut album by this young Italian band was a very good surprise to my ears. They deliver heavy, riff based Doom Metal inspired by the classic bands. It seems that they have dogged both the big traditional Doom Metal bands (Saint Vitus, Pentagram etc) and the big Epic Doom Metal bands (Candlemass, Trouble etc) and they have added a dark Heavy touch into their music (Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General). They also seem to have studied the traditional Doom Metal stuff of the mighty Paul Chain as they are capturing a musical atmosphere very similar to the one in some records of the Italian Doom Metal master. The good thing is that they are not try just to copy their influences but they carefully mix them in a result that after all sounds unique in my ears, in other words their song are recognizable thanks to their very characteristic vocals, their dark and obscure riffing and their foggy production. Their singer -and guitarist- SJack got a characteristic way of singing no matter what type of vocals he is using -low tuned, higher, mournful or epic). A better and more careful focus into their music would make you think that it is probably born in a catacomb of an old and forgotten Catholic Church. Obscure stuff... it is a fact. Do not miss this band. They simply rule.
